Art Meets Neuroscience: My Creative Contribution to the Diversity in Neuroscience Project

I’m beyond excited to share a major highlight from my creative journey. I was recently selected as one of the artists for the Diversity in Neuroscience project, an inspiring initiative by GH Scientific, supported by the International Brain Research Organisation (IBRO). This project brings together science and art to tell powerful stories about brain research in Africa. I had the honour of creating two original pieces: The Guardians of the Mind and The Healing Touch of Nature.

Livingstone Delali Agbo worked on art projects for the Diversity in Neuroscience project.

🎨 The Guardians of the Mind
This piece was inspired by the groundbreaking work of Prof. Patrick Amoateng, whose research focuses on epilepsy, psychosis, depression, and other neurological disorders. My artwork presents an abstract form of the human brain, divided into sections that represent various mental health challenges.

Surrounding the brain are guardian-like figures, symbolic protectors representing neurotransmitters and neuropharmaceuticals that play a role in treatment. I wove in elements such as chemical structures, nerve pathways, and pharmaceutical motifs to highlight the intersection between healing and neuroscience. This piece is a tribute to the unseen warriors, both human and chemical, who fight for mental balance every day.

🌿 The Healing Touch of Nature
This second piece draws from Dr. Robert Biney’s fascinating research into neuropsychiatric treatments derived from African biodiversity. The artwork is a blend of neuronal imagery and natural motifs, including leaves, herbal forms, roots, and abstract molecular shapes, all merging to celebrate the deep connection between nature and mental health.

Here, I wanted to explore the idea that healing is not just found in labs but also in forests, traditions, and the untapped potential of African plants. The piece honours the intelligence of nature and its powerful contributions to brain science.

I'm immensely thankful to Dr. Thomas Tagoe and the team at GH Scientific for this opportunity to contribute to the Diversity in Neuroscience project. It has been more than an art project; it’s been a learning experience, a cross-disciplinary conversation, and a step toward using creativity to amplify African voices in global neuroscience.
